A Lesson in Normcore with EXO’s Sehun
EXO has been one of the biggest names in the K-pop industry since 2001. Oh Sehun, the youngest member of the boy group, is the lead dancer, rapper and sub-vocalist. However, being able to dance and rap aren’t the only talents that this K-pop idol boasts. He also has enviable style, and was even named the best-dressed man at Louis Vuitton’s show by Vogue earlier this year.
While fellow EXO member Kai is known for his sleek, tailored looks, Sehun’s aesthetic leans more towards the wearable normcore style. Sehun’s outfits also have a boxier structured look, which can be created by opting for fabrics with form and structure, as well as pieces with clean, geometric lines. Of course, his boxy silhouette is easily achieved thanks to his famously broad shoulders (which not everyone has).
A collared button-up is a normcore staple as everyone has one and it’s easy to wear and style. I’ve chosen a creamy white shirt with a rounded cut-away design that resembles a Mandarin collar to soften the hard edges of the silhouette. The shirt also has symmetrical welt and gusset pockets on the front, ensuring that this piece is also highly functional.
Both the shirt and pants are of twill weave fabric but with completely different finishes. The more casual button-up has a structured fabrication with a thicker denier and rougher finish, while the pinstripe pants have a refined texture amped up by the classic tailoring print.
The black dotted-pinstripe pants may not seem like an obvious choice for a normcore outfit. However, the loose-fit cut and elasticized drawcord waistband make this a comfortable piece worthy of any normcore wardrobe.
A bomber jacket is a neutral piece that elevates any outfit, and it’s something that Sehun is regularly spotted wearing in the airport. While a classic bomber jacket should have bright orange lining, the black design I’ve selected is more of a modern iteration, especially with its sportswear detailing. Besides ribbed cuffs and hem that cinch in its square silhouette, the bomber jacket also has a classic sloped, ribbed collar that matches the shirt’s collar. For a twist, this jacket features a unique take on the fly shield; it’s cut in half to create a geometric block effect in the center.
Every EXO-L (EXO fans) knows that Sehun is a dog dad and a devoted one at that. His Bichon Frise, Vivi, is often seen in his Instagram snaps. I’ve added a little memento of his fluffy friend, an embroidered dog patch, on the jacket for a fun personal touch, so that Vivi can be by his side at all times.
I continued to go with black for the baseball cap, socks and canvas high-top sneakers, all of which are normcore must-haves. Echoing the vibrant splashes of red in EXO’s latest music video for their song Obsession, these pieces also have color-blocked pops of red. As Sehun usually wears his cap backwards, I’ve chosen one with color-block red straps so the design is on full display.
