Chanel Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick — Review
In 2019, I didn’t glow. After a few years of testing, writing about, and getting countless samples (I have the best job in the world) of various highlighters, I was d-o-n-e. I cut anything with the the words “shimmer” and “pearlescent” from my makeup bag and found new ways to achieve the same glow, like face oils or hydrating serums. With peak highlighter long behind me, I never expected to stand at the top of a new decade and recommend everyone try a one — and then I tested the Chanel Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick.
Back when I was still Team No Highlighter, I spoke to Chanel‘s global creative makeup and color designer Lucia Pica about the new launch. She designed the stick and the rest of Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection after a trip to the desert. She wanted the earthy colors to evoke emotions. “This mauve, taupe, brown, earthy color with accents of peach and pink makes me feel contentment and grace,” she explained. “This is just where I feel like I am at the moment and I think it’s what’s needed right now.” I still felt like glow for glow’s sake was firmly in my past, but contentment and grace I could get behind.
I started slowly, using the Multi-Use Glow Stick in Golden Light on the high points of my cheekbones. I like to use my fingers to rub it in to avoid that “slash of shimmer” look. But after a week of use, it worked its way onto my lids as well; the bullet is a little too thick for my lids, so I use my finger to apply.
The texture is so smooth and silky that I found myself wanting to find more ways to use it, and since “multi-use” is right there in the title, my wish came true. My favorite way to wear it as actually on my lips — on my skin tone, the shade looks like a delightful ’90s nude brown with some shine.
As someone who appreciates a trim makeup routine (and a million-step skin-care routine, but that’s another story) I love that I can use it with concealer, blush, and mascara and pull together an entire beauty look. Whether you planned to leave highlighter in the last decade or are all about that glow, the Glow Stick is definitely worth your time.
