Jonathan Van Ness Shaved Off His Mustache and Looks Unrecognizable — Photos
The temptation to attempt a self-inflicted makeover while stuck at home is ridiculously strong. There’s some Overtone Coloring Conditioner in my peripheral vision as I write this, and I will be genuinely surprised if I make it through the coming week without blue hair. But if Queer Eye‘s Jonathan Van Ness could hear me and wasn’t stuck at home himself, he’d probably rush over and try to stop me from doing anything drastic considering he seemed to instantly regret the facial-hair transformation he carried out this weekend.
Facial hair is a signature element of Van Ness’s look. While it has changed up — sometimes it’s a full, thick beard, sometimes it’s just a handlebar mustache, sometimes he trims it closely — there has been some form of fabulous fuzz on the lower half of his face for years. On Saturday, March 22, however, he posted a photo to his Instagram grid in which he looks like a completely different person.
In the selfie, a wide-eyed JVN reveals that he has shaved off his mustache and the sides of his beard, leaving him with a goatee. “This is officer Van Ness 🏳️🌈 Don’t try new lewks during quarantine 💗,” he wrote in the caption. He didn’t plan on leaving in chin scruff as is though — he just wanted to share the shocking look with his 5 million followers before going all the way. “I’m shaving this chin thing off now just was aghast at how I look,” he continued.
Before doing that, though, he took down his hair and shared a selfie video on his Instagram Stories, in which he made seemingly flabbergasted faces at his temporary look.
Not long after, however, he shared a sweetly smiling selfie in which he’s all but clean-shaven — just a hint of stubble — overlayed with word “FACE” in all caps.
Luckily, if JVN does regret shaving, his beard will grow back pretty quickly. But I, for one, think he looks lovely either way.
